Sand and Sky Statement

For my previous exhibition (“Arathusa Revisited”) in 2017 at Scott Gallery I took a small landscape I had painted of the African bush, which had a lot of warm colour, and used that as an inspiration for a series of abstract works.  This current exhibition is a continuation of that first series.  Some of the works have titles of deserts – ‘Mojave’, ‘Arabian’, ‘Kalahari’ – nearly all the works on paper are suggestive of warmth or heat.

The works on paper have a size limitation, so in order to try something larger, I had to go on to canvas.  There is one example in this exhibition.

The collages came from the off-cuts of a number of works which I had destroyed.
